Meet Your High School Youth Council for 2008-2009

St. Joan of Arc's Youth Council was created six years ago with three primary purposes in mind: leadership development, peer to peer evangelization, and fostering spiritual growth of themselves and their peers. This is a very active group of high school students. The teens work toward meeting high expectations and are willing to take on much responsibility. They meet every other week to plan and lead weekly IMPACT group activities, make recommendations regarding youth ministry activities, and help plan and organize "The CALL" High School Diocesan Retreat held annually at St. Joan of Arc in May. The Youth Council also holds an at-large student representative seat on the Parish Pastoral Council to serve as liaison between the two councils.

Youth Council members are chosen through an application and discernment process.  Service terms are for one year with new applications and current member re-applications accepted annually in May. The Youth Council was founded and is guided and mentored by Volunteer Youth Minister Ann Campbell and Brian Campbell, Coordinator of Youth & Young Adult Ministries.

IMPACT High School Youth Group (Pictures coming soon)

Interested in meeting with other high school teens for FUN, Fellowship, and maybe even a little more Spirituality?  IMPACT meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Catacombs Youth Area on the lower level. The planned activity ends at 8:30 p.m. with informal social time afterward until 9:30 p.m. IMPACT is open to all high school teens and their friends. Activities range from just plain fun such as "Human Board Games"--you and your friends become the game pieces to "Ice Night"--goofy games all involving ice and cold stuff  to "World Records Games"--how many times can you jump on a pogo stick or how many people can be stuffed into a Chevy Cobalt. Spiritual Activities have included Taize Prayer, scripture study, praise and worship, and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.  All activities are planned and led by high school teens and chaperoned by adult Youth Ministers.

Come and check it out any Wednesday at 7 p.m. You won't regret it!

Dead Theologians Society (DTS)

One of the newest high school programs here at St. Joan of Arc is the Dead Theologians Society (DTS). Our parish chapter kicked off in April with nearly 30 teens attending! The group meets twice monthly-- once on a Wednesday as IMPACT and the other time on a Thursday so the group can meet for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament before the DTS meeting begins.  The purpose of DTS is to learn about the saints to become saints with God's help.

Meetings are led by adult Youth Ministers. At each meeting, the life of a canonized saint such as St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Catherine of Sienna, St Francis, etc. is unfolded; a few short writings of the saint are read and informally discussed as a group to discover what they mean to our lives today. Intercessory Prayer, praying a decade of the Rosary, and the St. Gertrude's prayer for the Souls in Purgatory follows.  This all takes place in the "crypt" a room in the Catacombs youth area that has been transformed into a "church crypt" with statues, candles, etc for DTS meetings. Teens attending 3 meetings in a row or 5 non-consecutive meetings will be invested in a special DTS hoodie, embroidered with the motto in Latin, "Dead to the World. Alive in Christ."

DTS is open to any interested high school teen. Parents are always welcome to sit in and observe. The national group's website is www.deadtheologianssociety.com
